Veteran's Day
Today we honor all active and retired members of our United States Armed Forces.
Veterans Cathy Watson(left), our school custodian, and Lt. Colonel Lisa Davis (right) stand at our school sign.
First Grade Teacher, Mrs. Jackie Ovalle, assists her husband, SFC Rey Ovalle (Army Reserves, 299th Engineer Company) while he talks to students about his duties in the military. Their daughter Anaka helps with the demonstration.
At our action packed morning assembly, Mrs. Suzie Taylor read a poem about Veteran's Day and explained the meaning behind the poppy that we all wore proudly. Ms. Brock's class read a poem about Thanksgiving. Mrs. Fran Roebuck was cooking up some hot reads with special guest, Mary Eppard, who enticed us to read a story called "Dash" and "The Thing-a-ma-jigger is Coming Today!". Mr. Allers joined in the fun by reading the beginning of a story called, "The Ugly Pumpkin". They left us all wanting to get those books to read the rest and find out what happens!
Mrs. Organ-Lohr gave Character Counts awards to Second Graders who had been caught being fair this week. And last, Lieutenant Colonel Lisa Davis discussed the importance and meaning of Veteran's Day. Ms. Davis also announced the winners of the Veteran's Day Poster Contest and presented those students with awards.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
Our Monday assembly included many fun things. Mrs. Yeager read a story on an iPad called "What If..." and the students were all given an assignment to create their own creature. As students complete and color their own sheets, they are to bring back to school so they can be displayed on a rotating slideshow at lunch! Afterwards, the students were able to show off their costumes.
Check out the slideshow below to watch the costume/pajama parade that the students did to celebrate Halloween.

PAWS FOR READING!
Last night's PAWS reading night #7 was a fun, exciting night for all! We had 243 children and adults in attendance. We learned about a famous author and illustrator, Tomie dePaola. As the kids finished up their popcorn, Fran Roebuck told the Strega Nona story in costume with her magic pasta pot. Coach Stuart Dean explained to the kids about the football equipment used by the Madison County varsity football team. They heard Travis Warren read The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush and LJ Ward and Steven Dixon read The Popcorn Book.
All MPS families received a free book to take home as a special memento of the evening. The Mountaineer football players graciously signed autographs in those books for the many children who attended.
