Read Over The Winter Break!

posted Dec 16, 2011 12:53 PM by Danelle Nutter

Do you want to see Mr. Allers dressed in a clown suit?

The teachers at MPS hope that you and your family will have a very happy holiday season! We expect that even with all the excitement of the days ahead, reading practice will be an activity of importance at your house.  Please be sure to add the books (or chapters) that your child reads each day to the holiday reading log.  We hope that your child will come back to school with a full log that demonstrates regular practice over the time off.  Reading teachers will be assessing levels shortly after we get back in January so it is very important for your child to keep practicing reading even though there is a break from school.

A full reading log with 12 books or 12 chapters read is our goal for each child.  If we achieve this goal, Mr. Allers will be dressed as a CLOWN for the day. He has lots of tricks up his sleeve for all those that participate in the reading incentive.  Thanks for your part in ensuring that your child does not lose ground over the break, but instead, starts 2012 demonstrating growth as a reader.

Please use the reading log that was sent home to record your child's holiday reading! All reading logs need to be returned by January 6, 2012.

FESTIVE PAWS FOR READING EVENT

Dec. Paws For Reading

"Great news should be shared... It was truly a festive night Thursday as we celebrated our 9th PAWS for Reading Night.  Following what has been an amazing trend, the Primary School community turned out in huge numbers to champion the importance of reading in the lives of their children.  A record 298 people were on hand as guest readers, including St. Nick and his bride (Mike Sisler and Beth Racer), shared the remarkable works of Jan Brett.  I assure you that Madison Pride burns in the hearts of all Mountain Cats and their families.  Our AWESOME, supportive PTO and a large number of our teachers were on hand, forming what has become an unstoppable and immeasuarble force dedicated to the love of reading and academic excellence."

"MOUNTAIN CATS BLUE AND WHITE, AND THEY READ EVERY NIGHT!!!!!"

PRIMARY FOCUS ASSEMBLY

The nonsectarian and nonpartisan assembly program entitled "CHOICES COUNT!” featured an interactive educational format focusing on Trustworthiness, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship.

This highly effective and entertaining assembly included fun and energetic music, choreography, drama, costumes, props and audience participation featuring the vocal talent of the young adult group Primary Focus. Students were not only entertained but motivated to develop their personal skills in the area of positive choice-making principles. Everyone was challenged to make good choices and be personally reminded that:                                                “IF IT IS TO BE IT IS UP TO ME!”

Our Thanksgiving feast was held and families came to eat a traditional Thanksgiving meal with the students in all grades. We were so thankful for the delicious food and to all that joined us.  A big thanks goes out to ALL that helped out including the service learning students from the High School! At our action packed morning assembly, Mrs. Suzie Taylor read a poem about Veteran's Day and explained the meaning behind the poppy that we all wore proudly.  Ms. Brock's class read a poem about Thanksgiving. Mrs. Fran Roebuck was cooking up some hot reads with special guest, Mary Eppard, who enticed us to read a story called "Dash" and "The Thing-a-ma-jigger is Coming Today!". Mr. Allers  joined in the fun by reading the beginning of a story called, "The Ugly Pumpkin". They left us all wanting to get those books to read the rest and find out what happens!
Mrs. Organ-Lohr gave Character Counts awards to Second Graders who had been caught being fair this week. And last, Lieutenant Colonel Lisa Davis discussed the importance and meaning of Veteran's Day. Ms. Davis also announced the winners of the Veteran's Day Poster Contest and presented those students with awards.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Our Monday assembly included many fun things. Mrs. Yeager read a story on an iPad called "What If..." and the students were all given an assignment to create their own creature. As students complete and color their own sheets, they are to bring back to school so they can be displayed on a rotating slideshow at lunch! Afterwards, the students were able to show off their costumes.

Check out the slideshow below to watch the costume/pajama parade that the students did to celebrate Halloween.

PAWS FOR READING!

Last night's PAWS reading night #7 was a fun, exciting night for all! We had 243 children and adults in attendance. We learned about a famous author and illustrator, Tomie dePaola. As the kids finished up their popcorn, Fran Roebuck told the Strega Nona story in costume with her magic pasta pot. Coach Stuart Dean explained to the kids about the football equipment used by the Madison County varsity football team. They heard Travis Warren read The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush and LJ Ward and Steven Dixon read The Popcorn Book.

All MPS families received a free book to take home as a special memento of the evening. The Mountaineer football players graciously signed autographs in those books for the many children who attended.
